The Start of the 2023 RORC Caribbean 600
21.02.2023
Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club and supported by Antigua Yacht Club, the 14th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 started on time at 11:00 AST on Monday 20th February. Seventy boats racing under IRC, Class40 and MOCRA Rules, with crew from 30 different countries, started the epic race.
At the start outside Nelson’s Dockyard in Antigua, unstable squally conditions, with the wind speed in the mid-teens, produced a thrilling start for all classes. The RORC fleet have now set their sails for the spectacular 600nm race around 11 Caribbean islands.
The fastest boats in the fleet are expected to finish in less than two days, but for some it will be five days before returning to a triumphant finish in Antigua. Track the fleet via YB Races Player:

The trade winds blew and the swell kicked up, giving teams the fantastic sailing conditions that are unique in the sailing world. Antigua is the spiritual home of the RORC Caribbean 600 and the yachting community once again delivered, welcoming every team at the finish with warm smiles and cold beer.
The overall winner of the 14th edition of the RORC Caribbean 600 was Roy P. Disney’s Volvo 70 Pyewacket 70 (USA). The Pyewacket 70 team were presented with the RORC Caribbean 600 Trophy at the Prize Giving on Friday 24th February. They join an impressive list of overall winners from the United States; Warrior Won, Wizard, Rambler 88, Bella Mente, Shockwave, Proteus, Privateer, and Rambler 100.
“Pyewacket 70 doesn’t go into these races necessarily thinking that a corrected time win is our goal, we go for Line Honours and potentially to set a new record. So, when a handicap win comes that is fantastic,” commented skipper Ben Mitchell. “This win is right up there with the biggest victories, and Pyewacket has had a lot of success with the programme. In recent years the RORC Caribbean 600 victory is right up there.”
Pyewacket 70 Crew: Ben Mitchell, Peter Isler, Tony Mutter, Brad Jackson, Brian Janney, Daryl Wislang, David Tank, Jan Majer, Mark Callahan, Matt Mialik, Robbie Kane, Rodney Daniel, Tristan Louwrens.
Pyewacket 70 was the winner of IRC Super Zero, second was Volvo 70 I Love Poland (POL) skippered by Grzegorz Baranowski. Third and the fastest VO65 was Wind Whisper skippered by Joca Signorini.

Multihull Line Honours | MOD70 Zoulou | RORC Caribbean 600
22.02.2023
MOD70 Zoulou Wins RORC Caribbean 600 Multihull Line Honors Race in Thrilling Finish.
After sailing for more than 30 hours and reaching speeds of nearly 40 knots, the MOD70 Zoulou skippered by Erik Maris from France secured the Multihull Line Honours victory in the 2023 RORC Caribbean 600 race by a mere 11 seconds. Zoulou finished the 600-mile course in just under 31 hours, while Giovanni Soldini’s Maserati Multi70 (ITA) came in second place, just like they did the previous year, after yet another photo-finish. Zoulou's crew consisted of Erik Maris, Ned Collier Wakefield, Thierry Fouchier, Loick Peyron, Bruno Jeanjean, Bruno Mourniac, and Thomas Le Breton.
Despite leading until midnight on the first day, Zoulou lost to Maserati when the latter was fast on their foils heading down to Guadeloupe. However, Maserati encountered a setback on the penultimate leg when they got lost under a cloud, just as Zoulou had experienced during the RORC Transatlantic Race. The two boats battled it out and exchanged leads many times on the leg to Redonda, making for an exhilarating race. The last leg was particularly challenging, as the wind speed and direction were unpredictable, but Zoulou eventually passed Maserati to win the race.
"That was an incredible race with such a close finish," Maris said after the race. "It was as close as it gets; an incredible finish and great fun." The win was part of Zoulou's plan to compete in all RORC races, with the Rolex Fastnet Race set to be their next challenge. The RORC Caribbean 600 is one of the most challenging offshore races in the world, and this year's race lived up to its reputation as the multihull boats battled it out in intense conditions. The race covers a 600-mile course around 11 Caribbean islands, with a diverse range of conditions and challenges, making it a true test of both sailors and boats.
